A Great Book on How to open Spiritual Conversations
My friend Doug Pollock was a pretty aggressive evangelist who was proud of "Telling it like it is!" to those outside Christianity. Then he read my book, Listening for Heaven's Sake. He repented and decided to develop a better way to interact with folks outside Christianity.
Now Doug travels around the world telling how God brought him to a life changing decision. Doug courageously wrote a book with instructions and stories to help the rest of us do a better job of interacting with folks.
The Book is God Space. The title beautifully reveals his goal: Interact with grace and mercy with others to give God the space to work. If you want to allow God the space to work as only God can do, read this book.

Handling Differences and Remaining Friends
The election of 2016 has proven to be one that divides families, friendships, and churches to say nothing of politicians. The major candidates have been controversial.
I am also impacted by the pressure of this election. We all seem to realize that electing a President means sending thousands of people into positions of great influence even when they are not elected.
The Supreme Court is, IMO, a key to voting because the Justices serve so long and seem to be replacing Congress in making laws.
There are several ways to discuss these and other important but emotional issues.
Dictate the Answer: Try to demand others agree with my position. Anger is a frequent result.
Debate the Answer: Answers are rarely found in a real debate.
Dialogue the Answer: This depends on at least two people that respect each other, listen carefully and attempt to reach understanding even if we disagree.
We agree to disagree agreeably.
Deny the Answer: Just stop thinking and praying.
As for me, I prefer Dialogue but sometimes fail. Will you suppor a ministry that teaches people how to Dialogue?
Why Do So Many Mature Christians Leave their Churches?
My Home School in 1947
I just finished Church Refugees, a book that was written as a result of research on why so many long term members are fleeing churches. Despite their past faith and motivation they are bailing out of the churches they served in, supported and loved for decades. The book calls them DONES or Church Refugees.
I call them Seasoned Believers. It is the largest cohort of people avoiding organized Christianity but not faith in Christ.
Take my survey and let us know what you think are the reasons.
1. Too much emphasis on money.
2. Too boring
3. I lost faith in God
4. Tired of serving
5. Pastoral Rejection of my Ministry Ideas
6. Feelings hurt
7. I am too Busy
8. Church was not focused on God
9. Too many Pastor/Priest abuses
10. Other (You Add your two cents)

WHY KIDS JUST DON'T GET IT
I was visiting my
daughter last night when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper.
"This is the 21st
century" she said. "We don't waste money on Newspapers.
Here… use my iPad."
I can tell you
this….....
That frippin fly never
knew what hit him..
Why are you Upset with Church?
I hear a lot from Seasoned Believers about the things that disturb them at their church. These are long term believers that have often been cradle Christians yet they are frustrated and many drop out.
The Reveal Study carried out by Willow Creek a few years ago discovered that the people most likely to drop out were long term members that served, gave and supported ministries.
But they said, "So long!"
Why?
What do they do?
Where do they go when they don't go to church?
We do a lot to assist stagnant churches revive. If interested is supporting revival, send your donations here.
I have just attended a great conference at Group Publishing on The Future of the Church. There are many concerns about the ways so many church leaders turn off old members and new visitors.

Can People be Christians in the Old Eastern Bloc?
Sure! It is in the Constitution.
So, what is the big deal?
Well, there are several big deals.
There are many things in a country that are technically legal but are rarely practiced. For example, it is "legal" in the USA to say what you think. Freedom of speech is one of the things that is guaranteed by the Constitution. So, what is the problem?
If practiced, a person can lose his/her job or be attacked verbally and even physically.
So technically, we have the "right" to speak freely but we do not have the ability to actually say some things lest we get severely punished. Try going on TV or radio and say you think some "Civil Rights" people are actually racists.
In Russia, faith is legal unless a person attempts to practice it. It should be a secret or be punished.
It is no secret that we speak clearly about our faith so you can support us at the link here.

Why People Don't Go to Church
I am going to Colorado tomorrow to the Future Church Conference to discuss these issues with the people at Group Publishing. They do a lot of research on this topic and have published several books about it.
I read
several books, monographs and articles on outreach or evangelism or church
growth. All seem to agree with several points. Why Nobody Wants to be Around
Christians Anymore, Thom and Joani Schultz, The Rise of Nones, James
Emery White, “What Works Today,” by Rob Toal, in The State of Church Ministry
in America, 2017. Ctpastors.com, October, 2016: Church Refugees, Ashleigh Hope and Josh Packard, Group Publishing. I
have also interviewed several leaders, young people and retired persons about
their perceptions of the situation.
The
recent monograph from ctpastors.com summarizes the biggest barriers to outreach
this way. “Today’s church faces profound challenges within the broader culture:
political correctness, postmodern relativism, religious pluralism. We live in a
society full of unchurched people who don’t know the basic tenets of
Christianity or thee redemptive story the scriptures tell. The church at large
has a poor reputation among non-0Christians. Many hold distorted views of
Jesus, the gospel, and traditional Christian faith, so they are biased against
us before we had a chance to start a conversation.
Our
ability to engage the world is also hampered by internal issues. Some
Christians question the motive behind traditional outreach efforts, viewing
them as a bait and switch. Many in our congregations seem reluctant to share
the gospel, either claiming that evangelism isn’t their gift or hiding in fear
of potential rejection.
As a Seasoned Believer myself I think 2/3 of the people in my shoes are interested in a gathering that has the following attributes.
1. Transcendent. A place that God is sensed and sought and that shows up regularly.
2. Has a permission attitude that encourages everyone to get involved as he or she wants. No pressure and nobody saying no to the people that want to do something.
3. Recognizes the gifts and talents of every person.4. Little up front teaching. Open dialogue that everyone can enter.
5. Gentle worship.
6. Prayer for the sick an regular answers.
7, Meets anywhere. Bricks and mortar are not important.
Read Church Refugees to see their ideas about why so many Seasoned Believers are dropping out and why many Pastors do not care.

Come to Hear Me Speak
I am speaking at 7:00 AM on Tuesday November 2 at PROVOKE at Southbrook Christian Church in Miamisburg. The topic is GRIT in November.
Provoke is an hour long time on the first Tuesday of each month at Southbrook with a guest whose testimony is evidence of facing and dealing with a challenge in life.
I am the "Color Commentator" after the guest is interviewed by Charlie McMahan.
The weekend services at SB are also tremendous so if you want music and worship that combines contemporary style with the presence of the Holy Spirit and the best teaching I know, try it out.
How Anti Christian Radicals Attack Conservatives
An article in the National Review Mr. Stanley Kurtz wrote an article about a book about the best ways to destroy conservatives. As we know from recent events, that includes conservative Roman Catholics and Protestants, specially we who believe in the Bible.
In 2007, Robert Creamer published Stand Up Straight! How Progressives Can Win, a tactical handbook for the left that he wrote while serving a prison term for tax evasion and bank fraud. Creamer’s advice on how to handle conservatives (pp. 74-6) makes for interesting reading about now: In general our strategic goal with people who have become conservative activists is not to convert them—that isn’t going to happen. It is to demoralize them—to ‘deactivate’ them. We need to deflate their enthusiasm, to make them lose their ardor and above all their self-confidence…[A] way to demoralize conservative activists is to surround them with the echo chamber of our positions and assumptions. We need to make them feel that they are not mainstream, to make them feel isolated… We must isolate them ideologically…[and] use the progressive echo chamber…By defeating them and isolating them ideologically, we demoralize conservative activists directly. Then they begin to quarrel among themselves or blame each other for defeat in isolation, and that demoralizes them further.
Stanley Kurtz is a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center.

Evidence of the Spirit at Work
I mentioned a friend named Delores Winder this week. She lived to a ripe old age and currently resides with the King of Kings forever.
The Kingdom of God on earth needs many like Delores. There is so much sickness, disability, war and violence in the world that good people are wearing out and Delores had an amazing amount of energy to pray for people and see God touch them.
We met Dolores and Bill in Colorado in 1978 or so at a Presbyterian Renewal Conference. I did a session there that focused on inner healing and Christian Counseling.
Dolores and her husband were there and she spoke and prayed for anyone with any issue. A friend went to her session while she was in a very down mood. Her sadness and low energy had lasted for months so she was worried about another session of deep depression.
Just before the meeting started, Dolores said, " There are three people here with depression. If that includes you come up after I speak and you will get prayer."
My friend went forward and started to tell Delores what was happening. Dolores interrupted her to say, "Oh, you don't need to say anything, I already know the root issue."
With that she touched my friend on the forehead lightly and prayed for a few seconds. The sadness and gloom lifted immediately and never returned.
I saw examples of similar situations dozens of times. The sessions were low key and soft in tone. Every time I was with her God came with love and power.
One time I was standing next to her at CHPC with about 600 or so people in attendance. She bolted from the front of the sanctuary and made a beeline to a man we both knew who sitting with his wife about ten rows back.
She leaned over the man and said, " I know exactly what you sin is and so does the Lord. He is calling you and your wife to confess or God will bring disaster on you."
He was shocked and so was I. I had heard of his adulterous activities but Dolores had not. Not until the Spirit told her and she acted immediately. I fear he never repented and his wife never complained.
Come Holy Spirit. Ignite your holy fire again. We need your cleansing presence.
You can go here to thank our ministry for all it has done for you and so many others.

Be Patient and Pray 6
We need to ask good questions to promote congregational thinking and ownership of the future. unity and mission thinking.
- Will our walk with God change as a result of this program, proposal, event?
- How does this proposal, program, help us accomplish our purpose?
- How are we fitting our church to our mission and vision?
Use times of fellowship and discussion to promote thinking and bring out creative thinking. Formal meetings require some sort of order with a proposal, vote, etc. We need times when discussion can proceed without Robert’s Rules of Order.
At one church we had a discussion, took a straw vote to discern the way things were going, and made a decision whether to call for a formal vote. If there was not a consensus we would assume we had not heard God clearly and postpone the vote.
About 90% of all organizations do the same thing. It is the 10% that is done uniquely that makes the difference between the good and the bad. Peter Drucker:

A Giant in the World of Christian Life Passed Away
There are not many people that leave an indelible mark on our lives. Those who do linger in our memories for a long time in appreciation.
I Have met and worked with many people, both male and females, in the Christian world who are or were wonderful people and find Christians. I have met quite a few that preached and taught about the power of God and wanted to move in it but just did not have it.
I have met a few who had such gifts that I still stand in awe of how God anointed them. Delores Winder was one such person. She had such awesome supernatural gifts that more mortal Christians such as myself were extremely happy to be with her yet we had fear that she would "read our hearts and see just how poorly we had developed spiritually".
I have been with her at healing services where she spoke for 45 minutes and then prayed for long lines of people for hours, wearing out the rest of us while she kept looking for more people who needed the touch of God.
I am thankful to have had the privilege of knowing her and watching God use her fearless faith.
Blessings and peace. God is alive.
How You Can Impact the Election!
Yes, I know how to do it. The Bible tells me so.
PRAY!
Only a supernatural intervention can impact any election.
So, do your duty as a citizen and as a Citizen of God's Kingdom.
Blessings,

Women are Created in God's Image
What about those folks who do not believe in God the Creator? Can they genuinely say they think females have rights? What about the hard core evolutionists? Can they really promote the rights of females or anyone else?
Yes, if they want to borrow the language and terms of Christians and the Bible. However, it is hypocritical and irrational to do so. Without a biblical basis we must depend on a secular, scientific argument that arises from evolution. That means the survival of the fittest so we must ask ourselves a question.
Who is the most fit?
Once we decide that, we choose them to have the rights and allow the weak to die.
I know that The Declaration of Independence says that "All people are created equal..." but notice our rights are established by creation.
Without a biblical faith in Creation, helping the poor is irrational. Supporting minorities is irrational.
Since I believe in that all humans, regardless of creed, color, race, or nationality are created in God's and have as much worth as a billionaire or president.
The Pro Life people believe in women's rights, regardless of their age or place of residence. Babies that reside in my house have a right to life. Those that reside in my wife's womb also have a right to live.
Can Pro Abortion activists believe in the rights of women? Do they believe in the rights of some women who reside in special places?

tolerate as well as those things we reject are indicators of what kind of

I believe in Women's Rights
God Creates Humans in His Image
I am sold out to the need to protect and defend the right of women to pursue the same life and liberty as men. That seems like a big deal now because Hillary Clinton is running for President. Women's lives matter!
But I have a few questions about why some people are chiming in to fervently claim they are supportive of women's rights on some occasions but not on other occasions.
Maybe I need to tell you why I support the rights of all women and all men. It is simple: The Bible tells me that humans are special! Very special. The Bible says something
about humans that is unique. No other being has the distinction offered to us in scripture.
The Book of Genesis 1:27 says, "God made Adam and Even in His image and likeness".
So what? Why is that a big deal?
Image of God means a lot of things, but perhaps most importantly that we carry God's image and likeness in and with us every day. We are special.
Second, it means we are Ambassadors of the God that created us. Wherever we go on earth we carry the special signet ring that proves we are representatives of the Creator.
Genesis says that both males and females carry the imago Dei. Those who harm or destroy women cannot say they follow God. If we attack God's Ambassadors we are not being faithful to the King who created them.
Support a ministry that liberates female
PS. Do you see why it was Bible believing Christians that liberated slaves in America? To keep slaves demands that we deny the Bible!

Evangelical Christians Liberated the World
An Evangelical Christian is a person that believes in The Gospel or the Good News.
The Left Wing in America attack us as if we were haters when Evangelicals are the compassionate ones. WIKILeaks shows us exactly how the Left thinks about Christians, both Catholics and Evangelicals. We hate people.
We believe in The Good News, which says, "Every person is dead spiritually and can come alive through the love and grace of God. That means EVERYONE!
Some subgroups of society who struggle with a particularly difficult sexual or addicted lifestyle may think that God hates them because Christians seem to spend a lot of time talking about them.
That is a distortion of the Good News. God wants everyone to be free from bad habits, drug addictions, sexual problems, and other similar issues.
Slavery has been a problem for thousands of years. The Bible approaches it as a real bad problem and says, "STOP". How does it tell us to stop keeping slaves? Love every person and every slave as a Brother in Christ! If I love a person I cannot enslave him.
Ephesians 6 says, "Slaves, obey your masters. Masters, love your servants," for their real Master and your real Master is in heaven and He shows no partiality to an owner or to a slave! Mutual love drives out abuse.
It took a long time for Christians to do what the Bible commands but it finally happened!

How Christianity Liberated Slaves
I saw an article today that asked a silly question. It was, "How would Jesus vote?"
In the first place, Jesus lived in a day and time when there was one vote and it belonged to the dictator in charge. There was no democracy or freedom of speech, religion or gathering. And, of course, no freedom to carry arms. There were no arms.
Jesus lived at a time when every group had slaves. No group thought slavery was immoral or sinful. As a result, some sceptics of the Bible accuse it of supporting slavery. That is pure anti Christian propaganda.
Here is a thought question. How did Jesus and Paul and Peter and James attack and destroy slavery and dictatorships? How did the Bible attack and destroy domestic abuse?
My answer next time.

Innovation and Change Chapter 5
For a leader to bring about change he/she
must think systemically. How do we get the “herd” or group to move generally in
the direction you wish to go? Every church congregation is like a family system
that operates on invisible, unspoken rules and assigns unspoken roles to all
its members. To try to change those unwritten rules and roles is very
difficult.
Changing a group means that it must stop
thinking in its old paradigms and beliefs and have a new mindset. A paradigm is
a worldview about practices, habits, language and relationships. The Sweeten
family placed a very high value on independence, freedom financial risk taking
and individualism. My wife placed a high value on family togetherness,
structure, financial security and social niceties. My theme song was,
“Don’t Fence Me In” but hers was “All We Need Is Love”. Want to guess what happened? Harmony and peace! (Oh, yes.)
I left the church in which I was reared because I attempted to bring changes to the traditions and structures. I tried to set up small groups with college and career kids in their homes. I often attended such groups with my grandmother as a kid. We called them "Cottage Prayer Meetings".
But at his new church, everything had to occur inside the church house. That was their tradition. I was ordered to stop my dangerous behavior. I was unable to understand why it was considered wrong. I failed to understand how difficult it is to alter old habits and traditions.
As a Doctoral student I had some great training in small group dynamics and inductive Bible study. I loved it and was reminded of my youthful experiences with Grandmother Taylor. However, I unwisely assumed the Elders were open to new ideas. I had failed to prepare the soil for new seeds and it was quickly rejected.

However, I unwisely assumed the Elders were open to new ideas. I had failed to prepare the soil for new seeds and it was quickly rejected.
My independent, know it all, Sweeten family paradigm was strongly operative. As a result I did not ask for permission before launching a new and innovative program. The kids loved it but that made the Elders mad because I was seen as rebelling and teaching their kids to do the same. So, my ideas were good and the customers liked it but the people in authorities were not consulted. My bad!
That was a huge mistake on my part. I failed to understand the system and it blew up on me. I only respected my own ideas and the needs of the students. I concluded that it would be a success and I would be "carried on the shoulders of the Elders!" HA! As a result, I received the "Left Foot of Fellowship". I had to leave the church.
It was very painful. Have you ever attempted to create a new thing in an organization and been rebuffed? Write and let me know about it.

Judgment from a Hidden Camera
Trump was hacked by a secret camera that recorded his fantasies about beautiful women. Some women were outraged and many pious, conservative, Christians were deeply offended.
In a former post I mentioned that the WIKI Leaks and camera hacks going on are similar to the Judgment Day when everything we have ever done will be revealed and shown on a giant video screen with Jesus sitting beside us as the final Judge!
My friend said, "Yes, but every thought as well as every deed will be revealed! It is bad enough that everyone will see my evil deeds but to think even my greediest and lustful fantasies will appear in living color is almost too much for me to bear.
YIKES! Even the most buttoned up,pious Christian will not leave that judgment unscathed. The Bible says, "Everyone has sinned and fallen short" in Romans 3:9-19.
Many years ago Jimmy Carter confessed that he battled "Lust in his heart". Many Christians were deeply offended to think a born again Christian could have carnal thoughts. Are you scandalized by Jimmy's confession?
Is it possible for everyone to sin and fall short of God's glory in thought and deed?
Would you like to have a microphone clipped to your lapel 24 hours every day and replayed on the 11:00 O'Clock News?
Someday all of my thoughts and deeds will be played for all to see. Where can I find the delete button?
My thoughts do not let Trump of the hook for his fantasies or Hillary for her actions. I just want to point out that none of us could run for President if all our thoughts and deeds were on the news daily.
Both candidates are being stripped of all privacy in front of millions of people. Most of whom have no forgiveness in them. Thanks be to God for His grace and mercy, I can face the Judgment Day!

Vote for ?????
There is a lot of traffic on Facebook, Twitter and other social media about the election and for whom we should vote. I am not going to offer my opinion on that score.
I do wish to clarify what I think is a very important point for me. I am a Christian and base much of my political support, interests and financial support on biblical ideas. I attempt to figure out what scripture has to say about life, liberty and pursuit of happiness on my faith. The Constitution of the United States i an imperfect set of ideas and and ideals but it generally lays out a good way to operate the country.
My ethics and morals are based on scripture. Politicians base their ethics and morals on votes and personal preferences. In most instances if I agree with a politician it i because he or she thinks that supporting my views with get the most votes.
Most politicians do not base their ideals on the Bible. No one running for President now agrees with my ethics and morals. Do I vote anyway?
YES! I vote for politicians that promise to act somewhat closer to my ethical/moral/constitutional ideals than the others.

Addicting Addicts to Health
Back in the Sixties and Seventies we met hundreds of students and adults that were dependent on alcohol, drugs, sex, anger, etc. We led a house church across from campus and had Bible studies in addition to Counseling and Coaching students in my job as Associate Dean of Students. We loved the students and had compassion on them. We needed to learn how to help them find freedom.
We acted, failed, tried again, and saw a few successes but it was hard, mystifying work. However, we came away with some insights.
1. Change is possible. People can come out from being submerged in bad behavior.
2. Not every bad habit of chronic behavior is an addiction.
3. The key to change is bringing wounded, addicted people into the caring communities of acceptance and challenge. Here is the formula:
For those outside the recovered family:
Come as You Are; You will be loved!
When you are in the fellowship:
Stay and you will be loved and challenged to grow, be healed and discard the addictions.
These two things are the marks of a therapeutic community

Overcoming Anxiety
I see a lot of people who are anxious. My heart goes out to them. Some are anxious because they face a terrible situation. A sickness, loss of employment, danger or loved one with troubles. It is hard to have peace when that happens but it might be possible.
I was reading about anxiety and depression last week and was surprised that every single one said that anxious persons are Mentally Ill! We know that is not true. They say that all anxious people need Professional, Clinical help. They need a Psychiatrist medication.
Some people do need a Psychiatrist and medications, but not everyone. If the anxiety and depression interfere with you daily activities, then by all means see a Counselor. Talking to a trusted person is a very good and profitable thing. Here is Cincinnati we have Life Way Counseling Centers that do a very good job.
One suggestion is to join thousands of others that have read our books, watched our videos or taken our training classes. All of our materials are practical and aimed at promoting peace, prosperity, success and fun.

Girls and Anxiety
Girls can be Strong!
Everywhere I turn I read that teenage girls are experiencing more anxiety and depression than in the past. It was a recent headline in the UK as well as in the US. One comment that added to the mystery of "Why now?" was the note that kids from affluent homes were harder hit than those from poor homes.
There are many theories about why this is happening and so far it is a guessing game. Here is my theory.
Political Correctness is rampant, especially in schools and colleges. How do I reach that conclusion?
I listen closely to the discussions of young people and hear how fearful they are to be themselves because if they step over the largely invisible lines of the PC Bullying Shame System, they will be ruined forever.
PC Bullying Shame allows no one to survive! If you cross the line of misusing a person's gender, race, ethnicity, family structure, religion, personal symbolism, sexual practices, marriage preferences, parenting styles, political preferences, etc, you must be SHAMED and removed from society.
Teenagers, especially girls, desire to be loved and accepted. PC Shaming Bullies are all about REJECTING anyone that crosses their self made lines of total conformity. We all long for respect but PC Bullies specialize in Disrespect or Shame.
The PC Bullies say they "Don't feel safe when they see a Crucifix" so they use fake fear to spread panic and fear in society and teenagers suffer greatly from it because schools, media and politicians collude with the Bullies.
They refuse to allow free speech and free writing lest some PC Shaming Bully begin to shake and cry " I am afraid!" They might march and call everyone else a racist or sexist or deplorable. Then the PC Shaming Bully Media will agree and anyone that is shamed must withdraw in abject fear.
If you want to raise Teenage Anxiety and Depression, keep on rewarding the PC Bullies.
If you want to learn how to develop a strong, peaceful, clear mind, get my books on Power Thinking. If you want to be anxious, listen to the bullies.
