Should we Help the Poor?

I find it very difficult to challenge the current ways of helping poor people. Perhaps because of my own path toward freedom from poverty.

Or, maybe it is because of my training as an Educator I dislike doing too much for poor people. I saw what happened when parents did their kids homework, chores and house work.

Or, maybe it is because I have been  Counselor for a long time that I do not like the emphasis on current ideas about compassion, love and caring.

You see, I do not think it really helps poor people to do too much for them.

How do we decide when to give and when to withhold? Is there scripture that can guide us?
