What a shock it was for many of us to discover that the fancy theories of Psychology and Counseling are not the "Magic Active Ingredient" that we can sprinkle over hurting people and make them educative, well and whole. Although we were trained to believe we had the secrets to health, wealth and goodness we had a sneaking suspicion that it was not so.
Our quiet doubts became a roaring sense of failure when we began to see hurting people and the magic potion we dispensed did not immediately make it all better. (Momma to crying child: "Here, honey, let Momma kiss it and make it better".) What does a Pastor or Professional do when their magic fails? They attend a workshop or get another degree that promises to be a bigger, stronger, more powerful and effective potion. Some of the magic potions on sale every weekend are:
Hypnotism
Rapid Eye Movement Therapy
Neuro Linguistic Programming
Scientology
Anointing with Oil
Deliverance
Theophostics
Inner Healing
Generational Healing
Remember that these theories may have some validity. They are worth about 15% of the Helper interactions that can assist the person to make a change for the better. However, none is a magic potion. For example, I use several interventions. I like to use family of origin work with a genogram. I find it helpful when a person is looking for that type of insight. Not every person at every stage wants to work on his/her family of origin.They may be looking for healing prayers or renewing the mind or anointing with oil. It is up to that person.
However, the Core Skills that are always used 100% of the time in every relationship. They are:
1. Listening with Accurate Understanding or Empathy of the person
2. Respect for the person to make his/her own decisions
3. Warm caring
4. Genuine Interest in people
