It seems clear that unresolved losses, trauma and abuse can leave scars in the heart or holes in the soul. Those holes will grow into major pits of bad habits, addictions, diseases, and behavioral conflicts. In fact, the people at Kaiser have found just those kinds of correlations.
We know that correlations are not a guarantee of causation. However, some of these correlations are so strong that it is difficult to find other reasons for the adult problems. Take a look at the following chart.
This chart shows that there is a stair step correlation between the number of ACE like loss of a parent, sexual trauma, physical abuse, etc and smoking is very, very high. The greater the number of AC Events the more people smoked.
