Easter, Resurrection and Human Growth

It occurred to me this week that non-believers who roundly criticize Christians may be doing so because they desperately need us to be moral, ethical and generous. There are so few models of love, morality and ethics in the world that people are in despair for themselves and the world.

Somehow, someway, modern unbelievers are straining to believe in God but, in their view, the people who claim to how and follow God are failing at such a high rate that they lose hope. I realize that most of their criticisms are picking on a few bad apples but truthfully, I also get very discouraged when a well known Christian is caught in sin. The Roman Catholic Priests who sexually assaulted young men were a small minority, but it is the bad apples that get the publicity.

Easter, however, gives me hope and a hopeful message. Jesus was dead but God raised Him up.we were dead in our sin but God raised us up with Jesus. But here is the problem: we still carry around a dead part in our flesh. That dead part needs a daily resurrection. This is a message that is difficult to grasp. I knew I was born again by grace through faith. However, I somehow thought it was all up to me and my works after that.

I knew only God's grace and power could give me new life, but after becoming a child of God I assumed I was on my own. It was my power, my strength, my will, my wisdom and my trying that brought spiritual maturity. (If asked about it I may have said, correctly, that I needed the Holy Spirit to grow, but nobody asked me and I assumed it was up to me.)

How about you? Do you know you need resurrection power each and every day? Do you feel tremendous guilt and shame when you are imperfect? Do you turn to your own will and your own strength or to God for the ability to overcome the inner dead man?

Come Holy Spirit and heal my troubled soul. Come with your resurrection power and give life to my mortal body. Allow me to live in union with Christ.

The Incarnation on Tap for Tomorrow

Praise God I get to speak tomorrow about The Incarnation. Just think, this is the time of year when we who have been changed by God's Holy Spirit can explain to the world about the Change Maker!

When we read Luke 1 about the angel 's response to young Mary when she protested that she could NOT be pregnant because she was a virgin, the meaning and source of change is clear: "

29 Mary was greatly troubled ... and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

The Holy Spirit will do it!

36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”

The Holy Spirit has already done a great miracle with your cousin!

So, the same Holy Spirit that filled you and me and that had raised Jesus from the dead has brought about a miracle of a virgin birth. This was the Incarnation! God and Man came together in one person.

The Creator of the universe was now on earth in a physical body. Amazing. Wonderful. Emmanuel!

John 1---The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

What is next? What can we do to really enjoy that reality?

Spiritual Disciplines

On Monday, August 8 I am teaching on Spiritual Disciplines at the Life Way Counseling Center in Blue Ash. In preparation I am re-reading a book by that title which Richard Foster wrote over 20 years ago. It is still a wonderful book and I strongly recommend it especially for Seasoned Believers.

I remember when we brought Richard to Cincinnati . He spoke at College Hill Presbyterian and we had a wonderful time. He was rare among those who helped us actually encounter God and His word and not just sit passively and take in a preacher's ideas about God.

At CHPC we sponsored annual retreats and times away to hear God and develop a deeper relationship with Him. Some of my friends are still leading those kinds of retreats. Go to the web of this local group Times of Refreshment to find when they are having another one.

But come and be with me at Life Way Monday night. Go to the Life Way Centers web for directions. Or, see the Sweeten Life web page and the announcement on our last newsletter.

We will actually practice seeking God together so sign up today. Seating is limited.
